Spring has Sprung: It’s time to Organize, De-Cutter, and Purge your Home!

Spring-time is when Spring-cleaning your home is in full force! For me, I must confess, I spring clean all year round. So really, I’m a clean freak who actually enjoys cleaning and purging unused items and just getting rid of plain old crap that’s simply collecting dust!As I mentioned in a previous post on decorative lanterns, I promised that I would be blogging on ideas and suggestion to organize and de-clutter your home. Well friends, the time has come because TODAY I am sharing with you tips on how to Organize, De-Clutter, and Purge your home of crap!

When you are spring cleaning and sorting through the piles of items from clothes to jewelry or just everyday items. Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Have I actually used/worn this?
  2. When was the last time I used this?
  3. Seriously, will I ever use this?

It may seem silly but honestly it works. Everyday items aside from decorations should really have a place and if it does not have a place in your home then you must ask yourself ‘why, am I keeping this?’ Most of the time the reason people accrue ‘things’ is generally due to an emotional attachment.

Other times the ‘things’ are just things. Junk can pile up over night and before you know it the clutter becomes too overwhelming. It’s often much easier to just shut the door to that spare room or junk closet even though you had all the right intentions to organize and go through, than to face it and actually do it.

So my advice is to start small.

What does that look like? Well, instead of tackling your entire attic or basement start with a section of a room or office. Or start by going through one drawer of your dresser at a time. If it’s your closet you need the most help than partition it off and only attack that space and only move on when that portioned section is finished.

For example: I have a bookcase in my office but I only use this bookcase and honestly our two other bookcases for the same purpose, to display the decorative books I have bought or that were given to me. My role of thumb is to only display the books horizontally on one side of the shelf while leaving the other side of the shelf open for a decorative basket or candle. By doing this small display you are organizing the books from largest on the bottom to the smaller books on top in a pyramid concept but your are not overwhelming your office space with clutter. Now, the purpose of utilizing baskets on the shelf next to the books is for those little knick-knacks or items you just can not part with and that is OKAY, we all have those items. The baskets are perfect for this to 1.) place these items in a designated area together 2.) taking these small items off of shelves immediately de-clutters any room 3.) the baskets just ground as well as balance the look and feel of the bookcase in a room.

Decorative Lanterns

PictureJust about every store I walk in has lanterns, lanterns, and more lanterns. Almost every home furnishing magazine also has the exact same design concept of using lanterns everywhere in the home. I think it may be safe to say that lanterns are a versatile decoration that can be displayed throughout the year for every season and just about every holiday! So basically, lanterns are my kind of decorative design!!

I also think it is safe to say when it comes to storage in your home, it too has its capacity. So it’s important to find décor that has these multi-functioning purposes especially if space is an issue. I will have a blog in the near future about organizing ideas and suggestions to help you stay decluttered!

I was lucky to find this lantern at Pottery Barn; plus I got it on sale, which is a huge Win!

When I got it home I had some vague idea of what I wanted this lantern to look like, but was not sure where to look for the additional pieces. Store after store I looked for decorations as filler from Spanish moss, to regular moss, onto river rock, or even grapevine etc. you name it I thought about it.  I realized with the above-mentioned items how messy it would be to be digging out our vacuuming up any one of those items from Spring while trying to decorate this beautiful lantern for Christmas. I knew I needed something simple, easy, and functional.

So when I found this greenery that I could simply place on the bottom of the lantern with no pieces or residue falling off I knew this was it.  I added a battery operated candle for some height and Bellissimo!

When decorating bigger pieces, like this lantern, simple is always better.  I certainly did not want to take away from the actual lantern itself, I just wanted to add some warmth with decorations that complemented it not competed with the overall structure.  I think the final conglomeration looks better than even I had expected and if my husband says ‘Honey, the lantern looks really nice. I like the way you decorated it,” then it must be noticeably good!

If you have a decorative piece in your home and want to spruce it up go for it!  It’s actually quite surprising how different a room can look when you change a few pieces with items you already have in your home!

Happy Decorating and Spring Cleaning!

Valentine’s Day Craft!

Hello friends!

Hope you all are doing well! As you all know Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and I wanted to share this fun and really easy craft project that you can do in literally less than an hour. Unless, you have little ones then it may be a bit longer.

This craft project was less than $5 to make!

So I had a few picture frames in my craft room box and really wanted to make something cute and functional that can be displayed beyond say Valentine’s Day. Using a few bags of river rock left over from our wedding and thought this might be the look I’m trying to get. So here it is!

Picture

Supplies:
  1. 1 bag of river rock
  2. 1 bottle of mod podge
  3. 1 picture frame
  4. White paint (optional)

Directions:

  1. I removed the glass from the picture frame, (I hope to use this for a later project,) and painted the hard cardboard in the frame a distressed white. I let it dry completely. Now, paint the bakround white or any color (you could even paint the background of the heart a different color too it depends on the look you are going for). I wanted my heart picture to look rustic.
  2. I lightly traced a heart shape so that I was about to get the heart shape I wanted. I actually dipped each one of the rocks in the mod podge because I really wanted the rocks to stick to the paint and not fall off…like ever. In this step if you go outside of the lightly traced line that is fine. The rocks edges can give the heart edge a rugged look that doesn’t look like a perfect heart.
  3. Once I completed the heart with the river rocks I lightly brushed mod podge over the entire heart because it will keep everything in place. Plus, mod podge will dry clear!
  4. I finally placed the dried cardboard with the heart river rock back in the picture frame and viola!

I hope you have fun making this heart that can be placed in your home for Valentine’s Day and beyond!
